quality of life (QoL) in patients with cystinuria receiving tiopronin compared to those not receiving tiopronin<sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-5-font-size\" id=\"h-background\"><br><span class=\"fw-600\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ocean-blue-color\">Background<\/mark><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Cystinuria is a rare genetic disorder leading to recurrent kidney stones.<sup>2<\/sup> These stones affect daily and professional activities and reduce quality of life (QoL).<sup>3,4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Management of cystinuria includes lifestyle adaptations, such as increased fluid intake, as well as alkalinization of urine and prescription of cystine-binding thiol drugs (CBTD) such as tiopronin.<sup>1,5<\/sup> Tiopronin in cystinuria reduces stone formation by lowering the cystine level in urine to increase solubility.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There is limited evidence on the effect of tiopronin in cystinuria on health-related quality of life (HRQoL).<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-5-font-size\" id=\"h-aim\"><br><span class=\"fw-600\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ocean-blue-color\">Aim<\/mark><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers investigated the impact of tiopronin in cystinuria on HRQoL.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-5-font-size\" id=\"h-approach\"><br><span class=\"fw-600\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ocean-blue-color\">Approach<\/mark><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A survey was mailed to patients with cystinuria who were enrolled in two registries<sup>1<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list-wrapper\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patients receiving tiopronin from the Thiola\u00ae Total Care Hub registry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients not receiving tiopronin from the Cystinuria Contact Registry at New York University School of Medicine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey included the following<sup>1<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list-wrapper\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kidney stone experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The short form-36 version 2 (SF-36v2) generic HRQoL questionnaire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Wisconsin Stone QoL disease-specific questionnaire (WISQOL)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Information on treatment and underlying stone disease was collected.<sup>1 <\/sup>Analysis accounted for the time between respondents\u2019 last stone events and their HRQoL assessments.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-5-font-size\" id=\"h-findings\"><br><span class=\"fw-600\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ocean-blue-color\">Findings<\/mark><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"fw-600\">In total, there were 312 respondents to the survey with 267 (85.6%) receiving tiopronin and 45 (14.6%) not receiving tiopronin<sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The tiopronin-receiving group had more severe cystinuria.<sup>1<\/sup> They had treatment with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and higher<sup>1<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list-wrapper\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mean numbers of kidney stone events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Related hospitalizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surgeries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Endocrine, musculoskeletal, neurologic, and skin comorbidities showed statistically significant differences between the groups.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Use of pain medications was similar between the groups.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"fw-600\">Patients with cystinuria receiving tiopronin had better HRQoL measured by both the SF-36v2 and WISQOL<sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Both groups had SF-36v2 scores below the US normative mean (score &lt;50).<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Scores for the SF-36v2 questionnaire showed better HRQoL in patients receiving tiopronin compared with those who did not.<sup>1<\/sup> Significant differences were seen for all domains except physical functioning.<sup>1<\/sup> For the tiopronin and non-tiopronin groups, respectively, the scores were<sup>1<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fw-600\">Mental component score:<\/span> 46.9 versus 44.4 (<em>P<\/em>&lt;0.001)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite fewer respondents and unequal variances, the WISQOL questionnaire also showed better HRQoL in patients receiving tiopronin compared with those who did not, with the following scores, respectively<sup>1<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"fw-600\">Emotional impact:<\/span> 68.3 versus 60.0 (<em>P<\/em>&lt;0.001)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"fw-600\">Disease impact:<\/span> 65.8 versus 59.3 (<em>P<\/em>&lt;0.001)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"fw-600\">Vitality impact:<\/span> 67.5 versus 58.3 (<em>P<\/em>&lt;0.001)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For both questionnaires, worse scores were associated with shorter time since the last stone event and the presence of more comorbidities.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-5-font-size\"
